" October 1, 2008 "

Welcome to the Sixth Edition of the FHRC News - a monthly update to keep all informed and involved in the restoration and preservation of Riverview Cemetery. The transfer of the cemetery from the current owner to FHRC will occur as soon as we have a real estate attorney assist with the final documents. We will issue a press release and notify our mailing list when the transfer occurs.

Slate Of Officers: (To Be Voted Upon At The October 20 Meeting)

  • Lee Anderson - (President)
  • Cheryl Markiewicz - (Vice President)
  • Kate Wilhere - (Treasurer)

The Friends of Historic Riverview Cemetery incorporated with the State of Delaware on April 17, 2008.   We have a checking account at Wilmington Trust and an account at the Delaware Community Foundation located on the web at www.delcf.org.   The DCF currently provides our 501c (3) non-profit status.   We are in the process of filing an application for our own non-profit status as well.

MEMBERSHIP:

Everyone is invited to become a member. To join, you must fill out a membership form and pay dues. Your membership will last until December 2009; and from that time forward it will be renewable on a yearly basis. Your membership allows you to vote, serve on a committee, and possibly become a Board member or officer. We hope everyone who learns about the FHRC will take this next step and join FHRC. If you would like to apply to become a Board Member or serve on a committee, please call Cheryl 239-7842 or contact friendsofficers@gmail.com. A membership form can be found at the end of this newsletter and on our website.

Every person is needed to restore and preserve Riverview Cemetery. If you are able to help, please contact us. Below are a few areas to consider:

  • Maintenance & Grounds
  • Landscape Beautification & Tree Planting
  • Renovation of Chapel
  • Fundraising
  • Publicity
  • Endowment
  • Community Outreach
  • Education Tours
  • Membership Database
  • Research for National Historic Register
  • Computerize Burial Database
  • Inventory of Veterans

Do you have a suggestion or an idea of something you would like to do to help which isn't on the list? We'd love to hear about it.

    Bylaws:

By-Laws for FHRC have been sent to paid members by email and/or snail mail. They are also posted on the website until the end of October.

    Member/Election Meeting:

Mark your calendar for 6:30 pm Monday night, October 20 at the VFW Hall (313 Brandywine Blvd). If you have not paid your membership dues, you may do so on October 20 prior to the meeting. We welcome your attendance. At the meeting you will be asked to vote on the slate of officers, and vote to approve the By-Laws.

    Clean-up Days:

The next clean-up day will be on October 18, from 9:00 to noon. Bring your family and community group. We will continue to clear fence areas surrounding the cemetery, especially on Eastlawn Avenue. Wear gloves and bring branch cutters. Water and snacks will be provided.

    New Flags at Riverview:

Please take notice of a new American Flag, State of Delaware Flag, and Veteran of Foreign War flag by the West side entrance. This will be the site of our 2009 Memorial Day Service honoring all veterans interred at Riverview Cemetery.

    Veteran Inventory:

Take a look at our wonderful new page here on the website. If you have names to add, please contact Tedd Cocker at teecee62@comcast.net

    Request for Historic Photos:

We are collecting old historic photos of Riverview Cemetery. If you would like to coordinate this project, contact Lee (610) 388-1920 or email her at drleeanderson@aol.com.

    Tree Planting Grant:

In March 2009 approximately 30-40 bare Bare-Root trees will be planted on the East side of the cemetery to replace dead and dangerous trees. The Delaware Center for Horticulture will help oversee this project. Volunteers are needed.

    Vandalism Update:

No information is available on the stolen mausoleum doors. We are waiting to hear from Mr. Davis and Nationwide Insurance. Replacement doors need to; a) be made of a material less likely to be stolen; b) maintain the style of a Victorian Garden cemetery; and c) meet standards for the National Historic Register.

    Neighborhood Watch:

When you are in the area, drive slowly through the cemetery and report any suspicious activity or missing items to the city police.

    Adopt-A-Plot:

Let us know the areas that you are beautifying. You may go on our website, find your section on the map and email the information to friendsofficers@gmail.com.

    INTERESTING FACT:

    • In 1921 there were 131 re-interments from Central Presbyterian Church Cemetery (current site of Wilmington Library in Rodney Square) to Riverview Cemetery. On the west side near the fence (section G), you will notice these old stones where the dates are in the 1700 and 1800's. Riverview opened in 1872.

    Special Thanks This Month To:

    • Warden Steve Wesley, Sgt. Thomas Wassum, Lt. Jeff Hansen, and the men from the Plummer Center, Department of Correction. Crews have cut the entire cemetery three times; 84 tombstones have been uprighted; 67 trailer loads of branches and debris have been removed; the chapel door was painted; and new flags acquired. City of Wilmington Department of Public Works removes piles of debris collected from volunteers and Plummer crews.

    • Kate Wilhere placed 175 more FHRC brochures at homes in the Riverview neighborhood. Lee Anderson placed brochures in businesses along Market Street. Cheryl Markiewicz and Jeanie Fisher continue to read original documents to prepare an application for the national historic register.

    • Tedd Cocker is creating a veteran inventory and seeks information from volunteers who walk the cemetery and record information from grave markers. Sections done: 1,2,5,6,9,10,11,12,14,15,16,17,18,181/2,18s,18u,19, 20, 21,22.

    • Russ Pickett continues to create new and relevant pages on the website, including the "Veteran Inventory" and "Folks of Notoriety at Riverivew".

    • Richard Sutor has made excellent progress on the burial record transcription project. He brings technical expertise and respect for historical documents to his work. Richard maintains a rigorous pace and scanned original burial information from 1912 to 1937. Kay Schorah and Floyd Weber are transcribing the data and Walt Mateja imports the data into the current database.

    • Terri Sanginiti of the News Journal is a faithful friend to Riverview Cemetery. About 15 friends, family members, neighbors did a tremendous clean-up effort and had fun working side by side. At the same time, other volunteers recorded veteran information from the markers.

As always, we are ever thankful to Mike Bonkowski, Delaware Community Foundation, Jim Gish, Members of the VFW Post, and the soon-to-be elected officers.
