" Welcome to the FHRC News "

July was the month for moving years of accumulated dirt off of the baby section at Riverview!  Our turn-out was terrific with 45 men, women, and children.  Special thanks to: Dan from Cecil Vault & Memorial Company; Mr. Bright & Mr. Coleman and five residents from Mowlds Cottage; DSCYF Cabinet Secretary, Vivian Rapposelli and her family; Officer Harmen and an eight man crew from the Plummer Center.

Terri Sanginiti’s News Journal announcement, caught the attention of ABC Channel 6 Action News Wilmington Bureau Chief, Johnnie Braxton and her photographer and they interviewed Skippy Lyness about her son, Thomas, who was interred in the baby section 60 years ago.

The dirt pile in Section 8 ˝ (one of the baby sections) has been moved!  On this first day of August, 20 more volunteers filled holes in the cemetery; applied weed killer to the poison ivy along the Eastlawn Avenue fence; and cut out the ivy choking the cedar trees next to McMullen Square.  Several dead trees were also removed near the maintenance building.

Special Thanks This Month To:

  • Plummer Center crews cut grass on the East & West sides. They are doing an outstanding job. Also in July, crews cut up a fallen tree branch and had it removed by the City of Wilmington. The “No Dogs Permitted Signs” were made and donated by Lt. Jeff Hansen. FHRC provided a pizza lunch to show appreciation for our partnership with PCC.

  • Kerns Brothers Tree Service continues to water 40 new bare root trees and provide tree care; including help with a huge limb that fell during a storm.

  • Al Ballard from the City of Wilmington removed the old roof trusses that were piled along side of the baby section.

  • Jay Graf with Geo-Graf (Geotechnical Engineering) met with FHRC Board members and offered to provide an underground search using ground penetrating radar to locate markers in the baby section.

  • Madeline Dunn, Curator of Education-Historian from Division of Historical and Cultural Affairs presented a workshop to help FHRC learn more about the National Historic Register. Three FHRC board members attended along with volunteers, Jay Brady and Roberta Perkins.

  • Richard Julian (McMullen Square representative) pumped water out of the basement at the beginning of July and he and Jeff Younger, (Younger2) met with board members at the end of July and planned the next phase of the chapel project.

  • Board members assisted families, vault companies, and funeral homes with two interments in July. To all volunteers who contribute, time, energy, skills, and financial gifts to the restoration of Riverview Cemetery and the surrounding community…THANK YOU!
