Save the Date and Join Us:
(Volunteer Certificates for Students)
May 8th: Saturday 9:00 to noon: BABY GRAVE SECTION East Side. Using results of our underground survey we will dig and find markers covered by dirt. We will also fill holes in the cemetery.
May 31st: Monday 1:00: MEMORIAL DAY SERVICE under the Flag at Riverview.
June 19th: Saturday 9:00 to Noon: Install border and weed around daylilies on Washington Street and we will also collect over 800 American Flags from the Memorial Day Service.
July 17th: Saturday 9:00 to Noon: We will remove Ivy from McMullen wall and Plant Forsythia on East End to create a boundary with fence.
August 21st: Saturday 9:00 to Noon: We will Mulch daylilies on Washington Street and Clear 31st Street fence line of debris.
Annual Meeting 2010: Attendance 25
The Second Annual Meeting of FHRC took place on April 26 at the VFW Post 2907 Hall. The Board of Directors gave reports and showed over 100 photos of our volunteers in action transforming the cemetery.
- Membership Report: 128 members (18 joined as lifetime members)
- Financials (2009): Income $49,000; Expense $7200; Endowment $24,000.
- Operations: 34 Interments in 2009; 8 Interments in 2010 with 2 pending.
- The 2010 Good Neighbor Award was received by Lt. Jeff Hansen on behalf of leaders and work crews at the Plummer and Webb Centers. Tedd Cocker, board member, received special recognition. View awards by "clicking here".
Memorial Day Service at Riverview Cemetery: Monday May 31st at NOON:
Brother David W. Schlatter, O.F.M., former chaplain of the Wilmington Fire Department, and a member of The Franciscans who founded the Bells of Remembrance Project after September 11, will lead our program honoring all service men and women. He will bring with him the Bell of the Unforgotten weighing 2000 pounds. Each person in attendance may ring the bell at the conclusion of the ceremony. A light lunch will be provided after the noon service. Cub Scout Packs 959 and 803 will place 801 American Flags on veteran graves during weekends throughout the month in preparation for this special of day of remembrance. All are welcome!
Lawn Equipment Fundraiser:
Donations are still needed. Funds from T-shirt sales will be used to purchase equipment. T-shirts are available at all FHRC events and can be ordered by mail. Send a $20 check, select a size (M, L, XL). The shirts will be mailed to you at no extra cost.
Special Thanks in April To:
- John Kerns (Kerns Brothers Tree Service), recruited Bob’s Crane Service, Rickerman Tree Service, Twin Oaks Tree Service, and Bartlett Tree Experts; and together they donated a very long day of professional services on the West side of the cemetery. Thank you for a generous Arbor Day!
- John Kerns completed a Master Tree Inventory and Tree Management Plan.
- The 12 chairs salvaged from the chapel have been repaired and refinished.
- The Plummer Center crew completed the first grass cut in April. Great Job!
- Gary Schwetz from DCH assisted with the installation of larger replacement trees on the Market Street sidewalks in front of the cemetery.
- New flags were provided by two FHRC members; new ropes were hung with the assistance of a Kerns bucket truck; and flags were properly attached by Sgt. Wassum. What a team!
- Volunteers collected Easter flowers from graves, prepared a flower bed and planted daffodils along the Market Street corridor.
- The historical research team (Jay Brady, Gretchen Broadwater, Katharine Olinchak and Roberta Perkins) and leader, Cheryl Markiewicz are making great progress. Thanks to Howard Green (IOOF Lodge) for his assistance.
- Board members assisted with one private inurnment in April.
