This Month's activities:

Saturday, January 14th from 9:00 to Noon:  We need lots of volunteers to help us search for drains throughout the cemetery.  Some of these drains have been covered by dirt and grass.  A 2012 priority is to learn about our drainage system so that we can then make plans for road repair.  While looking for drains, volunteers will also mark holes so that Plummer Center crews can fill with dirt during the winter months.  Most of the groundhogs have been captured!  And, there are always sticks to pick up and ivy to cut off of tree trunks (something for everyone).  Hot beverages will be served!

There are a wide range of interesting family-friendly outdoor projects available.  "Corporate and School ‘team building groups’ are welcome!"  Please contact:  Lee Anderson 1-610-388-1920 or email:  drleeanderson@aol.com for project details.

Friends of Historic Riverview Cemetery provide drinks and snacks.  Participant certificates are available on request.  The Friends of Historic Riverview Cemetery exist to support the restoration and preservation of Wilmington’s most culturally diverse, non-profit public cemetery.

Special Thanks in December 2011 To:

  • EDiS Company::  For hosting monthly FHRC board meetings.  At the cemetery we have no indoor facility for meetings – yet!  And, thanks to Brian DiSabatino, for purchasing a wreath to support the FHRC fund-raiser.  Your blog entry about placing it on the crypt of your great-grandfather, Ernesto, was full of spirit!

  • Everyone who made the 2011 Holiday Greens Fundraiser a success include:  Wreath makers:  Debbie Fletcher, Cassandra King, Jean Schwartz, Kate Wilhere;  Source for wholesale wreaths:  Janet & Karen Lewis;  Wreath transporter:  Jim King;  Families and friends who purchased wreaths to place at Riverview or other cemeteries;  And FHRC volunteers who followed maps to place the wreaths.

  • Plummer Community Correction Center:  Moved more dirt to complete a project on the East side.  Volunteers will plant grass and place erosion matting in the spring.  Cpl Williams and her crew removed weeds from the Washington Street curb and Lt. McLellan, Cpl. Stokes, Cpl, Ewasko, and Cpl Herman will assist FHRC volunteers with winter projects.  Al Ballard (City of Wilmington) for being a great partner and removing a pile of debris from a clean up project around the ‘dirt building’.

  • Friends of Historic Riverview Cemetery volunteers:  Are ordinary people doing the extra-ordinary.  One person calls it a ‘modern day miracle’.  For the third consecutive year (2009, 2010, 2011) FHRC volunteers have given approximately "20,000 hours of community service!"
