National Register of Historic Places

Cheryl Markiewicz presented the Riverview Cemetery National Register Nomination to the Delaware State Review Board for Historic Preservation on January 11, 2012 at the Old State House in Dover.  The State Review Board unanimously passed a resolution to approve the nomination.  Madeline Dunn from the Delaware Division of Historic and Cultural Affairs will submit the nomination to the Keeper of the National Register at the Federal level.  The nomination was previously approved by the City of Wilmington Design Review and Preservation Commission on November 16, 2011.  FHRC committee members include:  Jay Brady, Gretchen Broadwater, Libbie Hawes, and Katharine Olinchak.  Thank you for your outstanding work and contribution.

Chapel Update

Community members signed petitions in 2007 to ‘save the chapel’.  Now, the same community is needed to take the next step and raise money and donate resources to renovate the building.

Special Thanks in January, 2012 To:

  • EDiS Company:  For hosting monthly FHRC board meetings.  Thanks for keeping us warm, cool, and dry while we have no indoor meeting space at the cemetery.

  • Tom Higley and Rich Julian:  who offered their professional time and suggestions at a meeting about the chapel.

  • Kerns Brothers Tree Service:  who took advantage of the mild January weather and grinded the large stumps left from ‘Arbor Day’ tree removals.

  • Terri Sanginiti:  who increased public awareness of our January ‘Treasure Hunt’ Volunteer Project with an article in the News Journal.

  • 15 men, women, and children volunteers:  who participated in the treasure hunt for the underground drainage system – the first volunteer project of the 2012.  Dirt and grass was removed from six drains on the west side of the cemetery.  Cpl Syrita Williams and a four-women crew from Hazel D. Plant Treatment Facility collected branches for chipping while also marking and filling holes.

  • 34th Street Block Association:  who put ‘Leash Your Dog’ signs along the cemetery fence.

  • FHRC Board of Directors:  who assisted with four interments in January and we appreciate our good working relationship with Chandler Funeral Home and Crematory, The House of Wright Mortuary, and Daniels and Hutchinson Funeral Home LLC.

  • You, our FHRC members:  who continue to offer your time, skills, and donations.  Thank you for remaining faithful to the mission to restore and preserve Historic Riverview Cemetery
